This past week, I decided to dive into the capsule wardrobe. I previously tried doing a capsule wardrobe over the summer. After having to make more trips than my wash schedule provided, I decided to let it go. So here I am, back to give it a try once more!

This time, I decided to try founder Lee Style Bee‘s 10 x 10 formula.

Basically the formula is 10 items of clothing you transition into 10 different outfits over 10 days.

I decided to remix the formula for myself. Since my new job has a dress code that does not permit denim or jeans, I decided not to include my shoes as part of my transitional collection.

My intention

My intention for this capsule wardrobe is to gain insight into what I actually like in my closet. I want every item to be a favorite. Along with curating the items in my closet, I kind of miss my days of working at H&M creating different outfits on mannequins. (Besides, I do not want to be one of those let me grab these jeans and a school shirt type teachers.)

What I’ve Learned

I loved doing this formula! It was such a genius idea.

I am starting to take more of a liking to solid color pieces that have a little flair.

I like flowy/oversized pieces tied with fitted items.

It is difficult to have warm weather in the fall. (My salmon pants were comfortable but they were also cropped pants so I didn’t really like styling them as much. I think that may be on account of the season.)

I need to document the outfits so I can remember which ones I have already tried.

Omitting shoes from the challenge allowed me to be a bit more flexible in my choices. I was also able to wear a pair of heels which I didn’t initially think to try. I only wore them once, but I was so glad I had a chance to.

In the Future

I’d like to have more accessories to style my pieces. Something as simple as rings, a scarf, or a different purse would have made a major difference in the outfits I wore.

 

I’ve decided the 10×10 capsule wardrobe is the thing for me. I will be sticking to this formula for a while and will make changes if needed. Would anyone like to join me for a challenge? Send me a message, DM on Instagram or write me below!

The Golden 3: 3 Tips for Purposeful Shopping

Prior to becoming an elementary school teacher, I was working in the field of retail. More than 30 hours a week I was surrounded by garments, jewelry, accessories, and my all time favorite SALES! Yes, they got me. I would always tell people, “I like my money where I can see it. In. My. Closet.”

I would buy items that would be trendy at the time and style it and make it my own. I mean, no one would really ask you for your help if you look like you needed it yourself. I remember my last count of jeans was 52. Yes, you heard me right!

Every season, I declutter my closet. Out with the old, in with the new. But ever since I began this minimalist journey, I’ve realized that it takes more than decluttering. There is a level of “letting -go.”

  1. Is the item something you can see yourself having long-term?
  2. What is the quality?
  3. Do you really love it, or can you do without?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I still enjoy shopping and like to buy items that I believe would be a perfect addition to my closet or home. But, it has to be just that. The Perfect Addition!

5 easy steps to Purposeful Packing

I am an over-packer. Not just a little bit, no… I can go a bit overboard. Not intentionally, though. I just want to have everything I need without feeling like something is missing. I also like to have ‘just-in-cases.’ You know? The items you throw in the bag “just-in-case” that probably never get used. Well the past two trips, I have decided to incorporate my recent adoption of minimalist practices (I’ll talk about that in a later entry) and pack my bags for my Mexico City and Hawaii trips purposefully. Perhaps, these “5 Steps to Purposeful Packing” can help you out on your next trip too!

Step 1: Pick Appropriate Sized Luggage

For the past two weeks I have been on a luggage hunt. I wanted to have quality luggage for a decent price. I also wanted different sizes to go with the length of time I’ll be at each destination.

I figured that by having three different sized luggage, I’ll be able to pack everything I need perfectly!

Small- 3-5 day stay || Medium- 6-12 day stay || Large- 13 days or more

Step 2: Pack the Essentials

Sometimes we stay at AIRBNB listings (use the link to get $20 off). There are unique places to stay. They only thing, for those who need one, is you do not have a housekeeper and sometimes toiletries are not provided. Packing travel sized toiletries saves you time when packing a carry-on. *Money saving tip: Purchase travel sized bottles that come with twist-off caps. Refill these bottles using your full-sized favorite products from home. More bang for your buck!

Step 3: Roll, Not Fold

I learned this trick from my aunt. Now, I always roll my clothes. It makes for much more room in my luggage. I’m also able to see everything I’ve packed when pulling out outfits and separating the clean from the dirty.

Step 4: Comfort, Cute, Classy- You Decide!

Think about the type of trip your going on, where you are going and what you may do. Will I need my hiking boots? Will I need to pack sunscreen? Are those heels necessary?

Step 5: Treat Yourself

When packing, you shouldn’t have to feel like you’re leaving things that you really like to have with you. I personally carry one tote bag for those ‘little things’ I like to travel with. My beau often carries a backpack. In our carry-on, we pack small things we like to have on our flight or that we may need on an excursion (ipad, notebook, etc.).

Packing can be very frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be. Start with the essentials and move forward from there!

This month has been filled with rest, relaxation, and love. After enough rain in April, I’m looking forward to seeing the flowers bloom in May. I recently decided to make a lifestyle change towards minimalism. “What is minimalism?”you ask. Well, let’s find out together.

I’ve been dibbing and dabbing with the idea of living a “Minimal Lifestyle” for a little over a year now. I grew curious about what it means, what it feels, and what it looks like to live simply. There are many universal practices and skills of how to be a minimalist but, after much reading of blogs, articles, and videos I have come to understand that

Minimalism is ridding myself of the excess while gaining simplistic living by my own means -for me.

So here I am, ready to take the leap, wings spread, in flight. SOAR! -May 2017

The Goal

I understand that this will be more than decreasing the amount of items in my wardrobe, an in that case, I must take my time. I’m hoping this lifestyle change will lead to a complete transformation in the interactions of my everyday life but in order to begin, I have three primary goals for this year:

  • Self Care/True to Self (mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually)
  • Financial Freedom
  • Purposeful Planning

The First Step

I want to began at my own pace. So to began, I’ve decided to work through the seasons of clothing in my wardrobe. Ridding myself of items that I no longer wear, I do not need, and don’t really like. I am also purposefully packing, when it comes to travel (post coming soon).
